Encountering God in Sacred Places

Submitted by Mr. Moore, Department Head of Religion

Every year our Grade 11 World Religion students travel with their own World Religion teachers to two of the four places of worship centres in the GTA This is an authentic examination of other faith communities that share our love for the one true Creator God. These students and staff either visit a Jewish Synagogue in the Bathurst area of Toronto which is at the heart of the Jewish Faith Community and then the travel to the nearby Macedonian Orthodox Church on Markham Road The other group travels to Brock Road in Pickering to visit the Devi Mandir Hindu Temple where they acknowledge the Universal God ” Um” and the various manifestations of the one true God and then they listen to a very inspiring young Muslim cleric at the Pickering Islamic Centre In the process the students discover that we have more in common with our faith community neighbours, and they develop a true appreciation of the wonderful cultural differences each community possess.
